Your Face is being photographed in public. Here’s how to stop it

Trismegist san/Shutterstock.comToday it’s easy to recognize faces from camera footage taken in public. Your movements can be tracked every time a camera sees you. There are ways to avoid this, at least for now. Modern cameras are extremely fast and modern computers can do this in real-time. If you have ever posted a photo of your face on social media, or if a friend has tagged it in one of their photos then it’s easy to search the internet for photos that have been identified. You are most likely to be tagged and logged by this technology. Although it’s scary, we use this technology every day for mundane purposes. For example, if you use a Snapchat filter to put a funny mustache on the face, that’s the same technology that is used in facial recognition in public. The same applies to biometric unlocking of your phone. Apple’s Face ID uses advanced algorithms and depth-sensing camera to match your face to the data on file. This ensures that you are the only one who can unlock your phone.
Facial recognition technology isn’t necessarily bad or good. It all depends on how it’s used. Public concerns about facial recognition technology are primarily based on the fact that it can be used to record you in public as long as there’s no reasonable expectation of privacy. If that were not the case, the paparazzi wouldn’t be able to do business. Wearing a mask is the best way to avoid having your face photographed in public. Many people are already using face masks for pandemic reasons. Biometric face unlocking won’t work if you have one. It is possible to get identify a face with a mask on that only covers half the face, but it’s much harder to do it using, for example, public security cameras.A full mask is more foolproof, but many parts of the world have anti-mask laws that may make this impractical.Hats, Sunglasses, Makeup, T-shirts, and HairAlejandro Ivan Suarez/Shutterstock.comA wide-brimmed hat makes it harder for cameras mounted above to see your face. Sunglasses, especially when worn in conjunction with a face-mask, are another effective way to prevent your face being scanned.

Another clever trick is to wear clothing with printed faces. Although it doesn’t prevent your face from being scanned it can make it difficult for facial recognition systems to see where you are going. It can make it difficult to see where you are going, even though it is a passive way to stop facial recognition systems from seeing your face. However, there are also ways to actively interfere. One way to defeat facial recognition is to use special privacy glasses. These glasses can detect when a camera is looking at your face and blind it without damaging any equipment. They use infrared-blocking glasses and reflective frames to blind the camera. Historical facial recognition can also be used to identify old footage. If the fidelity is high enough, old footage can be run through facial recognition systems and your movements can tracked after the fact. Unfortunately, your movements can be tracked back to you by hundreds of cameras that have been following you over the years. It is however a good cautionary tale about how future technologies can unravel privacy retroactively.Recognition Technology Is AdvancingWhile most of the ways to defeat facial recognition in public here still work, the technology is advancing quickly. Many of these mitigations won’t work anymore as the algorithms get smarter. For example, the “dazzle” makeup method has already been defeated.Advertisement

It may not be necessary to see a person’s face in order to identify them. Gait recognition technology, for example, can be used to analyze how someone walks and moves and match it to a record. You could also look at footage from protests and match them to a record by using gait recognition technology. Some cases have been stopped because of dissatisfaction and awareness. Microsoft, for example, has stopped police from using its facial recognition technology. They will also not sell it. Clearview AI facial recognition has been made illegal in Canada.
