Samsung’s Surprise Exynos2200 Announcement Leaves us With More Questions

SamsungAfter Samsung pulled out of its Exynos 2200 launch party last week, it promised that the chip would be revealed alongside its next device, which is presumably the Galaxy S22. The company changed its mind for some reason. The company has now given us a first glimpse at the chip, but without providing any details. This Samsung chip is the first to use AMD graphics. It also supports ray-tracing technology, which was previously only available on consoles and PCs.
The Exynos 2200 is similar to Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chips. It uses a 4nm design that includes one CortexX2 CPU (for single thread tasks), three Cortex A710 Cores (for low-power tasks), and four Cortex A510 Cores (for low power tasks). The Exynos 2200 should be comparable to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in graphics performance.
But be careful, there’s an elephant in this room. Samsung’s Exynos 2220 press release does not make any performance claims. We don’t know how fast the chip’s CPU or GPU runs or what improvements Samsung made to its previous SoC, Exynos 2100.
Leakers claimed last week that Exynos 2200 was delayed by thermal issues. They claim that the chip runs too hot at its target frequency of 1.9GHz and only reaches acceptable temperatures at 1.24GHz.
These leaks suggest that Samsung could make last-minute changes to the Exynos 2200 before announcing any performance specs. Although these adjustments could be design changes, it seems more likely that throttling will occur with the Galaxy S22’s release.
Samsung Galaxy flagships are usually launched in the United States, China, or other regions with a Qualcomm chip. However, if the Exynos 2200 chip is having problems, other regions may be able to get a Snapdragon processor in their Galaxy S22. It’s a shame, as Samsung is clearly trying to get rid of Qualcomm by creating its own better-optimized chips. This is similar to what Google did with the Pixel 6 launch.
